Try Me

I captured this image Sunday afternoon at Lone Elk Park just west of St. Louis. My wife wanted to go for a ride that afternoon, and I'm glad I threw my camera in the back seat. For those who care. . . Nikon D300 with 18-200mm Nikkor, f5.6, 1/90 sec, ISO 320, handheld with fill flash (+0.7 EV).

Was this owl in a cage? If not, how did you get close to it? How close were you actually?

Take a trip out to Lone Elk sometime, Bob. The birds are all tethered. Your kids will love it. You can get pretty close. I was about 7 or 8 feet away with a 200mm lens. Depending on the light, you can get some nice shots. Even so, almost all of my shots were pretty pedestrian. But I took about 25 of this bird. Out of the 25 this is the only capture that caught an exceptional expression. I've got some images of other birds that I'll post when I get time to process them.

Beautiful! It's a Screech Owl, isn't it? I have close-up pictures (film) of a Northern Saw-Whet Owl. They aren't tame, but you can walk right up to them. I think freezing may be a defense practice.
