Back from Hunting

I've been deer hunting since Friday. That's why I've not posted. Not much to report, however. I really wasn't trying very hard this year. Last year I shot an 8-pointer, which is gracefully mounted and hanging in my den (see pict to the right). Plus: we're still eating the meat. I went this year for the fun of hanging out with friends for three days. The deer were pretty scarce this opening weekend. When I left this morning no one had bagged anything yet.

I took maybe about half a dozen decent photos on the trip. Here's one of them. Right outside of Mt. Sterling, MO on Highway 50. I rolled down the window and shot this. The storm behind the hills and the sun behind me made for some interesting light.

Great photo.

Missouri has always had some big whitetails (we would call your buck a 3 pointer though). In Western Montana, our elk and deer populations have really taken a hit since the govt. reintroduced the wolves. Lots of fat wolf packs, less game, so our opening hasn't been to great either.

I heard they were now allowing land owners to kill wolves. Is that right? Hunters, too? Is there a season for wolves now?

They are still protected. There is a foundation that is supposed to reimburse ranchers for lost livestock, but it doesn't work to well and ranchers are expected to absorb the cost and do nothing. The wolves are really thriving, which has prompted some to shoot, shovel, and shut up. The problem is going to continue to get worse, and any sensible solution will likely be done last if history is any indicator.
