There's plenty on how worthy receivers must examine themselves/etc. But I don't see anything about a profession of faith (there's WLC 173, which refers to those who "profess the faith," but I think that's distinguishable from making a profession of faith as a discrete act). I have raised my children to trust in Jesus from day one, that it's who we are. It's our identity. I doubt it occurs to them that there would be some point in the future where they're supposed to say, "I know I've been praying to Jesus with you for years. Now I actually do trust him." Kind of implies they were lying before, doesn't it?

It seems the profession of faith requirement is a proxy for self-examination, a tacit admission that the Arminian/baptistic theory of conversion is correct and/or that the self-examination concept, defined in such a way as to rule out paedocommunion, is unworkable.alhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16290973794378411458noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-558461285642691762.post-90976844457295267992008-01-29T07:54:00.000-06:002008-01-29T07:54:00.000-06:00Jeff,Rob says: "That was some 15 years ago now an...Jeff,

Rob says: "That was some 15 years ago now and at that time the church voted by a large majority to maintain its practice. Through the years since many more men have changed their minds on the question and, I suspect, the vote, if taken today, would be much closer than it was in the late 1980s."

My recollection is that, while I was disappointed with the result, the issue was moved to a back burner. I am praying the same for the present controversies in the PCA. If so, I am encouraged there may be a similar result.JD Lintonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17281103949001850691noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-558461285642691762.post-61394777603196972142008-01-28T15:44:00.000-06:002008-01-28T15:44:00.000-06:00Interesting post.
